How Wikipedia is co-opted to disseminate elite narratives.

In the age of widespread “fake news” and “disinformation”, politics is increasingly concerned with a struggle over epistemic authority and consensus narratives. What IS necessarily determines what SHOULD BE, and control of the basic facts enables control over society itself. Sites such as Wikipedia naturally become a battleground due to their enormous influence. So when Wikipedia editors engage in revisionist campaigns to promote certain narratives and affirms certain conceptions of Truth, it’s worth considering how exactly this is happening, and why.

It’s easy to treat Edward Bernays and Walter Lippmann as prophets, or rather architects, of the systems and technologies of social control that dominate our current society. Both men argued for a class of “benevolent” elites to use tools of mass information to shape public opinion and manufacture consent for policies that would, theoretically, tend toward the common good. These tools have been put to good use over the past century, with the rise of mass media, centralized information curation, and academic capture all working towards manipulating the beliefs of the masses. …

There’s an old Winston Churchill adage that seems particularly fitting for this moment: “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” And the crisis presented by a mob storming and ransacking the Capitol is going to good use. The establishment left — Democrats, mainstream media outlets, and large swathes of Corporate America — have seized on the riots and used it as an opportunity to punish their political enemies and advance their own agendas.

By writing this, I hope to pathologize, and thereby marginalize, a subset of people I find annoying. These are the dataphiles, poor souls afflicted by a tragic and often irreversible epistemological infection. Dataphilia. I’ve seen it claim the minds of many good men, men who, in another life, were capable of abstraction; but alas, no more. …
